Suzzan came to town the day there was a flame-orange pot of chilli-lemon chicken stew on the stove. Five days later, we are still eating like kings, like KINGS, I tell you, with lamb moussaka one day, mushroom soup and a pear-rocket salad another, and a zucchini-mushroom tart the next. The girl has even recreated Chinatown’s best milky bubble tea in my kitchen, which means we really never have to leave the house again.
This morning when I woke up, she said: “I found a cherry-chocolate brownie recipe online for you.” I don’t know if she is trying to say something, or nothing.

saffron! you are SO welcome here!! the bubble tea story is a good one, because the last time suzzan made bubble tea here it was boring (semi skimmed milk) and this time it was VERY VERY GOOD (condensed milk, and lots of it).
And innocent little me thought that you needed a special machine to make bubble tea.
Not that I like bubble tea anyway. However, that makes me think of the near-Parkway Parade bubble tea stand where they make fabuloso Oreo shakes. They're a meal in themselves. You want? :)
but u do need a machine to make bubble tea no? last time i see at lido, they have this machine the size of an industrial freezer to seal the tea in with plastic.. but then, i ask u - WHERE YOU GET BUBBLE FROM? it's the BUBBLE that makes bubble tea. buy from supermarket cannot wan.
hahaha. sorry if this is all academic, since i only see never do. what u expect. i academic-wannabe mah.

The geek in me asks....where's the recipe for chili-lemon chicken stew? Herrro??
oh thank you ... i shall hook you up with my sister - maybe you can rope her into cooking you a nice meal when she is london. she does amazing things with eshallots!
yaaaaaaaaah - condensi milk will do that to a beverage. just last night i was making a dulce de leche tart... a ginger nut base, the dulce goodness and then pears baked only for enough time for the butter and sugar on the pears to caramelise. so what i mean to say is; amazing what two tins of the milk will give you after 3 hours!
we are eating it tonight. :D *slurp*
tym: yah! machines! me too i thought. but suzzan knows things lah. unless...unless...SUZZAN IS A MACHINE.
eh, why you don't like bubble tea?? have you tried bubble chocolate milkshakes?? but i tell you lah, green jasmine bubble milk tea is lagi best.
i will happily try an oreo shake near parkway parade, but already i am beginning to feel a bit jelak. haha

anainymous: wah, you have embraced this new identity! :-p i tell you lah, NO, you can sidestep the machine if you are cunning!! the machine is nice and all, with the sealing, and the shaking it up, but i tell you, home is good also. bubbles is buy from new loon moon. then come home and boil boil boil. they take a surprisingly long time to boil. i may have applied for a job in the time it took them to boil. suzzan may have read a third of a book. something lah.

cour marly: i want to encourage the geek in you, but i don't really have a recipe to offer. sorry! i was just throwing in things from the line-up of seasonings next to the stove. last week's chicken stew?/casserole?/whatever was chicken, leeks, mushrooms, carrots, with garlic, onions, two or three knobs of ginger, lots of that japanese chilli pepper that comes in a little red container, the juice of one lemon (could have used more), white pepper, black pepper... i think that's it. it was good the first day, and really good the second. :-)
+ + +
saffron: oh yah please put us in touch. i will bring her many shallots and then stand around and admire her having her way with them. hahaha!
failing which--please put me in touch with dulce de leche tart IMMEDIATELY. thank you!
Omigod!!! That zucchini mushroom tart looks divine!!!!!
angdree: YOU COME LAH! eh...actually you are coming. HURRAY!! :-D
That's good enough as a recipe! I just wasn't sure how the chili aspect worked: chili as in red chili slices? Or chili as in beans and tomatoes.
I don't often follow a recipe anyway. It's more like I get inspired by it and cook with whatever ingredients I have in the kitchen.
Okay, so one question about the bubble tea again - do you have the fat straws for a pearls/bubbles?
I ask only because today I was in one of those pokey stores which sell everything AND the kitchen sink - and wouldya believe they sell the fat straws for such beverages as bubble tea!
cour marly: yah, there is not so often chilli to be found in my house, but there are lots of chilli-like things. like chilli pepper. and chilli oil. all are good.

saffron: i like that you are still thinking about this. :-) i will say that when one is out and about, and when one buys bubble tea from the bubble tea maker, the fat straw is really part of the whole experience. however, in the privacy of one's home, i think it is acceptable to drink the bubble tea out of mugs, with a teaspoon for catching bubbles. (me too i have seen those straws for sale, but i have no desire to actually buy them.)
