so many knishes, so little time

When I asked what “kasha” is, the woman behind the counter replied with such matter-of-fact dourness—“Buckwheat.”—that I thought it best to order one filled with sweet potato instead. Next door, in from the biting cold, we settled into our seats at the Landmark Sunshine and cupped hot knishes in our hands. Then the dimming lights, and then that singular warm magical coloring—like the secret golden glint of a stealth pistol; like the sunlight coming in from the garden, and dust in the air, and hope in a cotton dress in the doorway—of a Jeunet.

i couldn’t help myself, i had the salmon tartare again

We hightailed it across Houston after, the wind pinching at our cheeks. At ten on a Friday night, Pink Pony is mullets galore. Spiky mullets on skinny girls, and four tables in a row of hip young things looking like they play in the same band; O, we love the Lower East Side. Over the bustle and the comfortable crush, the room sounds like “The Tide is High” and “Just a Gigolo” and “Jean Genie,” now that is a jukebox dollar well spent.

HEY. i think that is the knish place i stumbled into one time, where there was no contest -- the filling ordered was red cabbage. mmm... and a bowl of mushroom soup. "is it, like, a cream of mushroom soup?" i asked. "no!"she replied undourly, "it's jewish!"

this shoppe, does it have knishes and old jewish people up front and then a dining room in the back?

Yeah, you don't want the kasha ones, though I wouldn't want the sweet potatoes, either. In fact, I've never been a big fan of knishes. But mushroom would probably be the yummiest choice, if you have to be eating a knish.

cc: totally that is the knish place you stumbled into one time. i've never eaten in, i've only ever bought a knish to smuggle into the landmark sunshine.

and i don't think the woman was naturally dour or anything, i think she was just trying to embody the buckwheat. because after i ordered the sweet potato one she was, well, sweet.

bbrug: do i want kasha anything? maybe you will make a kasha cake one day. do it for the vegans!!! :-p

the sweet potato knish was very tasty, but maybe i see what you're saying if you're referring to the texture of it. nyup-nyup-nyup. my friend laureen ordered the potato one, classic. she said: "this knish is delish!" i haven't tried the mushroom, but certainly it can't be bad. if i see enough movies at the landmark sunshine, i might be able to work my way through the entire knish list one day.
