We sat in the front windows in our pyjamas, Lurlene in the one on the left and me in one on the right. Outside:

a dog in tight brown curls and a pink coat didn’t want to go anywhere. He spread out his front paws and clutched desperately at the soft snow.

a rotund bulldog ambled down the sidewalk. If he were a mogul he’d be known about town by his initials. Those initials would be R.W.

the cherry on top, a girl all in red perched on a large mound of snow.

two kids lay side by side in an inflated rubber ring while their father pulled them along behind him. One small and one smaller, they looked up at the sky while the sun came out.

Lurlene thought maybe we needed some hot chocolate to go with the snow. Surprising even me, I unearthed five kinds from my pantry. “We could taste test them all,” I said. She didn’t say no.

me too, i'm surprised. was one of them chantico?

"...Nutritionists are cringing. 'This should be a very occasional treat — like maybe on your 100th birthday,' says Neal Barnard, author of Breaking the Food Seduction. 'It has more fat than most candy bars.'..."

and do you know of this site: starbucksgossip?

cc, yah! five! surprise! but i didn't buy them all. the mariebelle one, yes. the mcness hot cocoa mix in a retro can from crate & barrel that i got for the packaging, yes, once upon a time. then there's the ghiradelli one, and the whittard's, and the fancy spanish batido de chocolate amargo that schmio carried back from spain.

we ended up making our way through, count 'em, one. but it was a very good one. and there is still lots of snow piled up everywhere, so maybe we are not done just yet.

chantico is total and utter yum. that's the one i had in transit at the vancouver airport. i had no idea what it was and tried to order it in size medium, and the girl held up a little cup and said, "it only comes in this size." i didn't think anything of it at that moment, but then i took a sip and i understood. ohhhh. yum.

Did you get the Mariebelle because of the lovely tin? That's how it happened with me. I was walking by the shop on Prince and I said, "MY GOD! What a beautiful tin! I must have it--nevermind about what's in it."

Well, okay, I kind of like what's in it, too.

yah. i remembered your chantico story, from right after you had just gotten back to new york, and were still hyper from not enough sleep... and maybe too much chocolate.

we are online at the same time!

i think that the chantico might make me feel like i did when we were at max brenner with jac-ring-ring. i don't think i want to feel that way again. the sound that sums up that feeling is "klong!"

bbrug: i got the mariebelle because i'd gotten the mariebelle chocolates before so i knew what i was getting into--but the lovely tin certainly didn't hurt. which is your mariebelle hot chocolate flavor of choice? the one i have at home is the basic hot chocolate, but i think i really, really like the dark. and somehow it occurs to me only now that i haven't tried the spicy. we must fix that illico presto! hey, that's french. use it in your french class for an "a" in extra credit. :-)

cc: i can't find the chantico print ads, but i keep wanting to read you them over the phone. it's like, "if you were sitting in a chocolate chair in a chocolate house on a chocolate street reading a chocolate newspaper...you still wouldn't have as much chocolate as there is in a cup of chantico" or something. something lah! it is funny, and chocolatey.

we are totally online at the same time, which means everybody is at home, but i am absolutely not going to call you because i have been online for way too long already and i need to go read, plus i really want to go sit under a hot shower for a long time. i was in the park till i couldn't feel my feet anymore, and the thing is, i like having feet that work.

Well, I've only tried the one that I have, and that's the Aztec Original Hot Chocolate. I'm pretty sure that I, too, would prefer the Aztec Dark or the Spicy, as the Aztec Original is a little sweeter than I'd like it, but we takes what we gets, eh?

Hm, I wonder how late that shop is open . . .
